Bowling the Blind

Monday, February 2nd, 2009

Brandon, we were just bowling the blind, not bowling blind.  What happened to you?

This week we bowled the “blind” team aka we bowled against ourselves. In order to win our points, we had to bowl 90% of our team average, which meant that we had to bowl 610 or better scratch. The first game was a no brainer, we all bowled well, surpassing our needed score by 96 pins. The second game was a bit dicey. Brandon, the man with a 201 average decided that he was tired of putting up the big numbers and dropped a 134. He did not strike at all during the second game but he was able to get a mark in the last frame in order for us to win the second game by the skin of our teeth. Thanks for the contribution. By the time the last game came around, we figured out how to bowl and easily won it. Brandon got his groove back just in time to hang Bob in the pizza frame so we will be dining on pizza next week on Bob’s dime, again. Man, how many times has Bob had to pay? So the Snakes were able to not be one of those teams that loses to the blind. Whew, dignity is intact.

Andrew 178 165 136 Total: 479

Oh yeah, did you notice that I put up the big scores this week? I beat all of the guys! Woo-hoo! Totally doing the booty shake!

A Tale Of Two Teams

Monday, January 19th, 2009

Man, this week was tough. There were more ups and downs than episode of Behind the Music.  First game, no one made our average and we lost by 121 pins. Second game, we all made our average, had 5 straight snake attacks and won by 122 pins. Third game, only Andrew made his average and we sputtered to a halt, just 27 pins short of our opponents.

2 points overall.  Lame.

In addition, there were pizza frames on both the first (Bob) and second (Andrew) games, so we got to eat some pizza at half price for the two suckers.

Here are the scores:

Jen 126 160 124 Total: 410
Andrew 141 193 182 Total: 516
Bob 141 211 137 Total: 489
Brandon 167 205 184 Total: 556

Flat out crazy-awesome night.

It’s getting close to the end of the first half, with next week being position round, so we knew we had to bowl well to close the gap between us and the teams ahead. Fortunately, we were able to bring our A+ game. Going up against Team 12, who was missing their third bowler and had to take his blind score, the Snakes struck again and again, with every member beating their average in every game, and 3 out of 4 getting their +50 bonus points. Brandon had nine in a row (aka “The Buffet”). I picked a 2-10 split (and came sooooo close on a bunch of others). I was hung in the third game pizza frame, so there will be pizza next week, courtesy of a bad split. We ended up beating Team 12 with our scratch score against their handicap — that’s how good this week was.

Pre-Bowling for the Sherrons

Sunday, October 12th, 2008

This week, Bob and I had to pre-bowl because we had tickets to the Death Cab for Cutie concert. When we got there and started bowling, we knew right away the lane conditions were not comparable to what we were used to on Monday nights. It agreed with Bob because right away, he started off with a bang and churned out a 194. Holy cow, I think that was 50 pins above his average! I was pretty even-keeled and bowled just a tad shy above my average which means 1 point for me. Bob tripped up in the second game but I made up for his poor showing. During the third game, though, I was starting to get tired and didn’t achieve my average (I mean, I biked 20 miles before bowling and was stinky). It wasn’t too bad, though, so Brandon and Andrew, let’s get 7 points this week!

Jen 150 173 141 Total: 464
Bob 194 132 157 Total: 483

Oh, and by the way, we both struck in the fifth frames during the first two games so the Pizza Frame is still on!

For the Win…No, Not Really

Wednesday, October 8th, 2008

This week’s bowling was a bit disappointing. After a excellent start in the first game in which the Snakes destroyed JDMC by 90 pins and a fairly strong second game, we decided to f*@k it up and give the rival team not only the last game but the overall pins as well. Damn. I guess the only upside to this week was that Brandon got stuck with the pizza frame but since we all ate dinner, we just had him buy a chicken tender dinner in which Bob, Andrew and I shared. Mental note: do not eat dinner before bowling in case of a pizza.

The Bet Begins

Monday, September 29th, 2008

This year, we’ve modified the bet so to encourage consistency to better improve averages. Last year, if we beat our average or beat our average by 25 pins, we would get 1 or 2 points respectively for a possible of 6 points per week. Now, we can get 1 point per game over average and an additional 2 points for 50 pins over our series average. Consistency equals improvement. Hopefully.

In week 4, we were hoping for some consistency to kick in. The previous two weeks, we’ve won 2 games but were blown out in one game, costing us the total point. Well, bowling is simple. Bowl your average, factor in handicap, and you have a good chance of winning. Good thing for us, we started off the season pretty low, unintentionally of course. This was a good week for the most part. Jen was the only one whose average has started off close to last year but she had a rough week. The rest of us have started off pretty poorly but finally rebounded this week. Even though we gave up 50 pins a game to the Roadkill Crew, they just couldn’t keep up with SoaL and we swept them.

On a side note, we had Andrew on the hook for a pizza in both the first and third game. However I choked each time and saved him from buying our dinner. I also choked in the third game and missed my third game point. After tugging ball 1 in the 10th and leaving a nasty split, i only needed two pins to beat my average by one. Instead, I tugged it again and only got one. Choke. Speaking of Choke, the recently released Choke was produced by ATO Pictures, founded by Dave Matthews.
